Leading the offshore future
Offshore wind is projected to be a trillion-dollar industry by 2040, according to the IEA. Denmark, the
birthplace of offshore wind, is well-positioned to be at the forefront of this bright future.

L
ast year offshore wind power only provided 0.3% of the global electricity supply. That represents an almost 30% increase from the start of the decade. Still,
much of the potential of offshore wind has
yet to be realized. With a long history and
broad expertise, companies in the Danish
wind industry are uniquely positioned to capitalize on the projected growth of offshore
wind.
Offshore at home
Since Denmark became the first country
in the world to put wind turbines offshore,
the country has been a leader in offshore
wind. Today the country boasts over ten offshore farms with more planned in 2020 and
beyond. Whether they have gravity base or
monopile foundations, these farms share a
common trait: the turbines are supplied primarily by Danish producers Vestas, Siemens,
and Bonus (acquired by Siemens in 2004).
Fueling the global supply chain
Deep water on the horizon
Windy Denmark is not the only place offshore wind is on the rise. Currently, offshore
wind capacity stands at nearly 20 gigawatts
in Europe and is projected to increase by
almost 500% within the next two decades.
That translates to a wealth of opportunities
for Danish companies. The dominant manufacturers Siemens Wind Power and MHI
Vestas Offshore Wind together have produced almost 90% of the currently installed
offshore wind turbines. Hundreds of other
companies supply every link in the offshore
supply chain. They are involved in wind
turbine production, wind park planning
and analysis, component supplies as well
as logistics, installations and servicing of
wind turbines.
Nearshore wind farms are growing at a
steady pace across the globe. These are
typically built on a solid foundation on the
seafloor. Placing wind farms further out to
sea using floating wind platforms may offer
great promise for meeting the world's energy needs. The development of commercial
floating turbines are in the early stages, and
only a few farms are operational globally.
But, floating platforms could significantly
increase the area of sea available for offshore
wind farms and allow countries with limited
shallow water, most notably Japan, to benefit
from wind energy.
With its rich history of innovation and
expertise and a sizeable, well-intergrated
community of companies covering the entire
value chain of the wind industry, Denmark
is poised to be a major contributor to this
promising sector.
