Development of new fossil free fuels for the shipping industry is constantly moving closer and MHOCO expects its fleet of offshore support and crew
transfer vessels will be 100% fossil free before 2030,
CEO and founder Mik Henriksen said.
Just a few years ago when we started looking at
new alternative fuels, we thought it would be at least
fifteen years out in future before we could be 100%
fossil free. But things are developing incredibly fast
so now we believe it will happen before 2030, Henriksen said.
The next generation of vessels being built now
could potentially be fossil free as soon as 2023 or
2024 with just modest changes, Henriksen said.
MHO-CO is involved in several projects for the development of fossil free fuels for shipping and is for
example heading a consortium with Aalborg University, Danfoss, Stuart Freizer Marine, Sterling Plan B

and Ballard Power Systems Europe which has received a grant from EUDP.
Over the next three years the partners will develop and test a propulsion system for maritime transport and MHO-CO will test both fuel cells and new
liquid cooling system battery technology on its
newly launched advanced hybrid vessels.
Our new hybrid catamarans can easily be converted to 100% fossil free powered vessels, said Henriksen.
Earlier this year, MHO-CO launched MHO Asgard
and MHO Apollo, two 35 metres offshore catamarans
with fully integrated hybrid electric solutions that
can be adapted to future technologies such as hydrogen fuel cells.
MHO-CO is also working on several other projects,
including a new consortium for eMethanol fuel cells.

MHO-CO was founded in 2015 by Mik Henriksen,
who designs the vessels. It is headquartered in
Esbjerg.
Its fleet is specialised to service and support the
offshore wind industry and provides a wide range of
services, including crew transfer.
