An entire island off the grid
King Island in Tasmania, Australia, is unconnected to mainland grids. Hydro Tasmania has now secured a
system, which is capable of 100 % renewable operation - the first megawatt class off-grid system with this
capability in the world.
BY EBBE FISCHER
For more than a century, Tasmanians have relied on
hydropower from Hydro Tasmania to grow communities and the economy. Now, The King Island, south
of mainland Australia and part of Tasmania, follows
in the steps of this tradition.
The aim of The King Island Renewable Integration
Project (KIREIP) is to develop a world leading, hybrid
off-grid power system to supply 65 % of King Islands
energy needs using renewable energy.

A remarkable project
The project is an initiative of Hydro Tasmania with
the assistance of the Australian Renewable Energy
Agency (ARENA).

The system is capable of 100 % renewable operation, the first megawatt class off-grid system with
this capability in the world.
Hydro Tasmania has developed an integrated
solution using wind and solar generation supported
by a range of innovative enabling technologies, and
coordinated by a hybrid control system. In the early
phases, 2.45 MW of wind generation and 470 kW of
solar PV were installed.
While these renewable energy sources are well
established, the enabling and storage technologies
are highly innovative.
Unconnected island
As a remote island community, King Island is not
connected to a mainland electricity supply.
Electricity on the island was earlier generated
entirely from diesel fuel - from a 6 megawatt (MW)
power station; serving 12 gigawatt hours (GWh) of
annual customer demand and peaking at 2.5 MW.
King Island is placed in the Bass Strait. It is the
largest of three islands known as the New Year
Group, and the second-largest island in Bass Strait after Flinders Island. Almost 2.000 people live on the
island.
ABOUT: HYDRO TASMANIA
Hydro Tasmania is Australias largest generator of
clean, renewable energy.
Every year, Hydro Tasmania produces about 9.000
gigawatt hours of clean electricity from hydropower.
The system has a total capacity of more than 2.600
megawatts and includes 30 power stations and
more than 50 major dams.
Hydro Tasmania produces enough to power about
900.000 Australian homes and small businesses.
Hydro Tasmania employs more than 1300 people.
All are diverse, skilled, and passionate about a clean
energy future for Tasmania and Australia.
