S
ince 2019 our world has been turned
upside down by the unpleasant experiences of Covid 19 a virous which hits
a truly international business such as the
Wind industry extremely hard. The stories
from people caught on a ship on the other
side of the earth have been a part of the Wind
World through out almost the whole of 2020.
At the same time Wind & Solar energy has
inadvertently, and almost by chance, stolen
the world agenda due to fear of severe climate changes.
At the recent Glasgow Cop 26 summit, the
world came together with intentions and
goals for reducing the man-made carbon
footprint on our planet. It is not an easy task
and coal wasnt cut completely from the energy supply sources. It is still there with an
intention of eventually phasing it out
completely.

However, much we would like to switch
completely to renewable and carbon neutral
energy sources it is not realistic to do so in a
short time frame. Workable solutions are going to be key in the years to come. For instance, In Australia they are literally ahead
of the curve. In Tasmania they have built and
are currently running an energy system
which is wind and solar based with diesel
as backup on quiet rainy days so to speak.
Europe is in many ways the poster child of
the modern renewable energy story. In 2019
Wind energy covered a third of EUs energy
needs in. 2021 has exposed one of the risks
in Wind energy namely not enough wind
blowing. This opens opportunities for alternative energy sources, as well as for ways of
storing energy from wind on a more permanent basis. Currently plans are made to produce hydrogen from excess wind energy
production. Other ways of storing excess energy are being tested huge sub terranean
flexible water pools and rubble in steel tanks
are currently live in small scale.
Apart from the above-mentioned big picture
issues- optimization and scaling of the current technologies and processes are core
and key in the day-to-day operation of the
modern windfarms. In this issue we have
picked two hand fulls of specialist companies whom each excel in their daily
businesses.
