Declining use of fossil fuels
in Europe
Renewable energy is on the rise - today it is the third biggest energy resource in Europe. However, renewables still have some way to go before they overtake fossil fuels such as oil and natural gas, while nuclear
energy has been on the decline.
BY EBBE FISCHER
According to annual data from each member state
of the European Union, there has been a reduction in
the use of non-renewable energies on the continent.
According to Eurostat, total energy consumption
in the EU in 2019 decreased by 1.7 % compared to
2018. The data follows trends for commodities relating to primary energy production, imports and exports, gross available energy and final energy
consumption.
Wind is on the rise
In 2019, oil consumption still was more than double
that of other energy resources. However, there has
Gross available energy, EU, 1990-2019
been a steady rise in the use of renewable energy surpassing solid fossil fuels in 2018 and gaining further ground in 2019. The use of solid fossil fuels such
as coal decreased by 19.7 % in 2019 and reached the
record lowest value since 1990.
Wind power remains the most important and
fastest growing renewable energy source. According
to a report in June 2021 by ETIP Wind and Wind
Europe (Getting fit for 55 and set for 2050), the size
of offshore wind turbines will double in the next 10
years, along with offshore wind farms providing
bulk power for crucial grid services.
The report states, that wind energy can reduce
costs while also meeting growing demand from
business and society. Also, that the cost of wind energy will continue to decline significantly over the
next 30 years due to increased turbine size and capacity and new ways of installing and operating
wind farms.
By 2030, the cost of bottom-fixed offshore wind
farms is expected to fall by 44 % to 48€/MWh and the
cost of floating offshore wind farms will fall by 65 %
to 64€/MWh.
FACT: ENERGY CONSUMPTION
IN EUROPE
Despite a bid to reduce the use of fossil fuels - oil
and natural gas still remain the most used energy
resources in first and second place, respectively.
Oil consumption is being reduced overall, despite
a slight increase between 2014 and 2017, whereby
natural gas levels were rising in 2019, according to
Eurostat.
However, renewable energy use has shown stable
growth - having already surpassed solid fossil fuels
in 2018 and was gaining further ground in 2019.
Solid fossil fuels decreased by 19.7 % in 2019 and
reached the record lowest value since 1990.
The share of energy from renewable sources used
in transport activities in the EU-27 reached 8.9 % in
2019.
