ADVERTORIAL From owner-managed specialist to a new phase of growth After 30 years as an owner-managed specialist, Scanfiber Composites has a new owner and a new CEO. Backed by Fjord Defence Group, the company is now set to expand capacity significantly, broaden its customer base and strengthen its engineering and ballistic design capabilities. BY FLEMMING ØSTERGAARD Since 1996, Scanfiber Composites has specialised in ballistic composite solutions for military vehicles and vessels. These include spall liners, which protect against fragments inside armoured vehicles, and add-on armour made from ceramic composites, which can increase protec tion without the additional weight associated with conventional steel armour. The balance between protection and weight is crucial, explains Scanfibers new CEO, Peter Bjørn Bertelsen. As protection requirements increase, it becomes increasingly important to keep weight down where ever possible. That is what our products are designed to do. We need to optimise protection against the specific threat while preserving as much payload capacity as possible for other purposes, he says. From ownermanagement to the next phase of growth Peter Bjørn Bertelsen took up his position on 1 August 2026, after Scanfiber became part of the listed Norwegian company Fjord Defence Group earlier in the year. He has worked with ballistic composite solutions since the early 1990s and served as CEO of Roshield, later TenCate Advanced Armour Denmark, during the companys scale- up. After eight years outside the defence industry, he is returning to a familiar market and customer network. The change of ownership marks a generational transition following founder Erik Christensens 30 years of building the companys expertise. Continuity will be maintained, but responsibility, market engagement and development will now be shared among more people. The sales organisation is already being expanded with experienced industry professionals. Fjord Defence Group CEO Jon Asbjørn Bø has 25 years of experience in the defence industry, including five years with German Rheinmetall. Scanfiber has a strong Dingo 4x4 Photo: KNDS Germany Growth is already assured because the contracts are in place and the projects are well into their scale-up phase. We therefore need more capacity at the factory in Sindal, and within 12 to 24 months we will also need a second factory. Peter Bjørn Bertelsen, CEO of Scanfiber Composites position in the German market, which played a part in the acquisition. Jon Asbjørn knows the German OEMs. Scanfiber has some sizeable contracts with them, and the projects will require substantial scaling over the coming years. That may also help explain why Scanfiber came to Fjord Defence Groups attention, says Peter Bjørn Bertelsen. Capacity must stay ahead of demand Fjord Defence Group invests in Nordic defence companies with growth potential, providing capital and strategic guidance while leaving each company responsible for its own specific growth plan. Capital is important because subcontractors in the defence industry often need to invest in capacity before final orders are secured. Scanfiber already has a substantial foundation for growth through existing programmes with European manufacturers that are now approaching scale-up. Growth is already assured because the contracts are in place and the projects are well into their scale-up phase. We therefore need more capacity at the factory in Sindal, and within 12 to 24 months we will also need a second factory, says Peter Bjørn Bertelsen. Capacity in Sindal can be doubled, but further capacity will still be required. The current assumption is that the new factory will be located in Denmark, although no location has yet been decided. Peter Bjørn Bertelsen Photo: Scanfiber Composities protection requirements. Ukraine demonstrates how the threat landscape continues to change, and the need for protection extends beyond crewed vehicles to unmanned systems, sensors, weapon stations and other critical components. Whereas, for example, a logistics truck might previously have been armoured to NATO STANAG 4569 Level 1 or 2, Level 3 is now the minimum. With every new war, the way it is fought differs somewhat from the previous one, and forces adapt accordingly. Equipment currently being procured in Western Europe and NATO must be suitable both for a traditional conventional war and for the conditions now being observed in Ukraine. Several thousand armoured vehicles will be delivered to European countries over the next five or six years, while new types of platforms and critical components will also require protection, says Peter Bjørn Bertelsen. Moving further up the value chain In the longer term, the ambition is also to expand the engineering team and move Scanfiber further up the value chain. While the company currently focuses primarily on developing and supplying ballistic components to OEMs, it aims increasingly to offer engineering and ballistic design as part of the overall solution. Technology in the defence industry is constantly evolving, as are SCANFIBER COMPOSITES Scanfiber Composites A/S has many years of experience in ballistic protection.
